If you would rather start with the minimal editor that ships inside TeX Live, TeXworks is the lighter place to begin.

Related read: TeXstudio gives you code folding and a built-in PDF viewer out of the box, with sensible defaults you rarely have to touch. WinEdt takes the opposite position: almost nothing is fixed, and you are expected to shape the editor around your own compile workflow. Worth comparing before you commit to either.

Troubleshooting TeXstudio: four problems and what actually fixes them

TeXstudio ships with defaults that work on a standard LaTeX install, so the problems people hit are nearly always about what sits underneath it or about a setting they changed once and cannot find again. Every fix below is the answer in TeXstudio’s own manual.

You installed TeXstudio and nothing compiles

TeXstudio is an editor, not a TeX system. The manual is explicit that the actual LaTeX system has to be installed separately and is not provided by TeXstudio, so on a clean machine you need MiKTeX, TeX Live or MacTeX first. The tell is an error naming the command rather than anything in your document, such as a failure to start pdflatex. Check the distribution outside the editor before you touch any setting: if
pdflatex -version
fails in a terminal, the editor was never the problem. If it works in a terminal but not in TeXstudio, the editor cannot see your PATH, and the fix is to put the full path to the binary into Options, then Configure TeXstudio, then Commands.

The PDF opens in a separate window instead of beside your text

The internal viewer is built to sit next to the source rather than to open a window of its own, which is the layout most people install TeXstudio for. Whether it does that is decided by an option on the viewer command, not by a window setting:
--embedded
docks it beside the editor and
--windowed
floats it, and windowed is what you get when the command carries neither. So a viewer that keeps floating usually means the option was dropped from the command at some point. Edit it in the same Commands page.

Spell check underlines everything, or nothing at all

This is a dictionary path problem rather than a language problem. TeXstudio takes one or more search paths for dictionaries, separated by semicolons, and a path that points nowhere leaves the checker with no words to check against. The defaults are
[txs-app-dir]/dictionaries
on Windows and
[txs-app-dir]/../Resources
on macOS. On Linux, install a hunspell dictionary from your distribution and point the path at
/usr/share/hunspell
, where they normally live. Add a second path rather than replacing the first if you write in more than one language.

You edited the build commands and now you cannot get back

The Commands page is where most self-inflicted breakage happens, and it is also where the recovery is. Each line has a revert button on the right that restores that command’s original setting, so you can undo one bad edit without resetting the rest of your configuration. Out of the box, TeXstudio compiles with pdflatex and displays with the internal viewer, which is the state to revert to when you have lost track of what you changed. When you do need a different binary, use the file browser button at the end of the line rather than typing the path: TeXstudio rewrites the command syntax around whatever you pick, which is the step that hand-typed paths usually get wrong. The full option list is in the configuration chapter of the TeXstudio manual.

🏆 Our Verdict TeXstudio is a comprehensive LaTeX editor that seamlessly combines ease of use with powerful features, making it an indispensable tool for academics, writers, and anyone who requires precision in document creation.
